“Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong” About… Mortal Kombat (2021) - Rotten Tomatoes

Does a Mortal Kombat need a Mortal Kombat tournament? That was the question critics and audiences were left pondering after director Simon McQuoid’s new adaptation of the beloved video game franchise arrived in theaters and on HBO Max last weekend.

The new movie has everything fans love from the games and was promised in its killer trailer – awesome characters, mind-blowing combat, jaw-dropping fatalities – with one minor exception. It tells the story of the lead up to the titular otherworldly tournament, rather than of the tournament itself, with soul-sucking Big Bad Shang Tsung sending Outworld’s finest fighters to kill Earthrealm’s chosen fighters before the Mortal Combat competition even begins.

As some noted: It’s a Mortal Kombat movie about trying to stop Mortal Kombat happening. But does it work?

Critics and audiences are split, with reviews lifting the movie’s Tomatometer score to 55%, which is just Rotten – and actually places it in the top four video game adaptations ever. So, more Friendship than fatality, if not quite a flawless victory. (Sorry, there’s going to be a lot of that.) Fans, on the other hand, seem to be loving what they see, forgiving some of the rushed storytelling and spotty acting because… whoa, how f—king cool are those Sub Zero fights!? The movie’s Audience Score is a very Fresh 87%.

In a bit of a departure for our podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong, where we usually look back at least a few years at a beloved/despised/divisive film, this week’s episode sees our hosts and mega Mortal Kombat fans, Jacqueline Coley and Mark Ellis, going deep on the new blockbuster. Joining them is another huge fan of the games, pop-culture expert and YouTube personality, Brian Tong. Together, they enter the arena to talk about which character stole the show, which fight slapped the hardest, and whether they’re pumped for the inevitable sequel… and eventual tournament.

Check in every Thursday for a new episode of Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast From Rotten Tomatoes). Each week, hosts Jacqueline and Mark and guests go deep and settle the score on some of the most beloved – and despised – movies and TV shows ever made, directly taking on the statement we hear from so many fans: “Rotten Tomatoes is wrong.”

"Paddington 2" Beat Out "Citizen Kane" On Rotten Tomatoes, And The Internet Had Thoughts - BuzzFeed

We can only imagine Mank giving us a hard stare.

It's official, folks: Orson Welles's Citizen Kane, which has long been considered the greatest film of all time, has officially been dethroned by Paul King's Paddington 2, the widely beloved family classic.

Yup, Paddington 2 became the top rated film on Rotten Tomatoes after someone dug up and submitted a negative review of Citizen Kane from the Chicago Tribune.

The 80-year-old review came from a critic at the Chicago Tribune who used the pseudonym Mae Tinee.

The best part of this is that Citizen Kane JUST lost it's 100% because Rotten Tomatoes dug up this 80 year old "meh" review of it for no discernable reason.

Twitter: @OculusImperia

Part of the review reads, "It’s interesting. It’s different. In fact, it’s bizarre enough to become a museum piece. But its sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of a distinction and general entertainment value.” Oof, guess they'd be taking marmalade over Rosebud.

History has been made and Paddington enthusiasts are tuning out the naysayers! Just take a look at Twitter for some of the most passionate reactions to this breaking film news.

3.

please don’t misinterpret the adjusted Rotten Tomatoes rankings to mean that “Paddington 2 is now the best movie of all time.” Paddington 2 *already was* the best movie of all time. thank you. https://t.co/TmEbjUrWOA

paddington 2 has double the reviews as citizen kane. thus, it has been the Best Film since its release,, film bros can't pretend citizen kane held anything over it... embarassing! Paddington 2 Supremacy!

I'm sorry but did Citizen Kane have a scene where a talking bear gives a man a haircut using marmalade as shaving cream? No? Then sit the fuck down, Citizen Kane. https://t.co/RBqvrXC0tP

Rotten Tomatoes has updated their list of movies with a perfect 100 per cent Fresh rating, since Citizen Kane was knocked off the top spot.

After a negative review from The Chicago Tribune, published on May 7, 1941, resurfaced on the platform recently, Citizen Kane lost its 100 per cent score – with Paddington 2 now surpassing its score.

Now, Rotten Tomatoes has collated a list dubbed “The 100% Club”, in which every film has exclusively ‘Fresh’ reviews rather than ‘Rotten’.

‘Citizen Kane’ Is No ‘Paddington 2,’ Says Rotten Tomatoes - The New York Times

rotten.indah.link

There is perfect. And then there is almost perfect.

And as anyone who’s ever gotten a 99 percent on a test can tell you, the two are not the same thing.

“Citizen Kane,” the 1941 Orson Welles classic about the rise and fall of the publishing magnate Charles Foster Kane, long had a perfect critics’ score on the film website Rotten Tomatoes, which had aggregated 115 reviews. Until last month.

That is when a rediscovered write-up by a critic who died decades ago played spoiler.

The 80-year-old, less-than-effusive review, headlined “Citizen Kane Fails to Impress Critic as Greatest Ever Filmed,” resurfaced last month as part of a new archival project at Rotten Tomatoes. The review, which ran in The Chicago Tribune in 1941 and was quietly added to the “Citizen Kane” page on Rotten Tomatoes in March, brought the classic film, which is regularly placed atop lists of greatest American films, down a peg or two.

“You’ve heard a lot about this picture and I see by the ads that some experts think it ‘the greatest movie ever made,’” the critic, whose punny pseudonymous byline was Mae Tinee, wrote. “I don’t.”

The problem? It was a little too fresh, apparently.

“It’s interesting,” the reviewer wrote. “It’s different. In fact, it’s bizarre enough to become a museum piece. But its sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of distinction and general entertainment value.”

The film’s black and white photography, which has been lauded for years for its atmospheric, noirish touch, was criticized as “shadowy and spooky” by the reviewer, who said it “gives one the creeps.”

“I kept wishing they’d let a little sunshine in,” she wrote. (She was a fan of Welles as an actor, though, calling him a “zealous and effective performer.”)

With the inclusion of her dissenting opinion, the film is now rated only 99 percent “Fresh” on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.

This means that, according to the review site, there are now 63 films with at least 40 reviews that are now more universally admired by critics than “Citizen Kane.” The site’s “100% Club” includes some predictable classics (“Modern Times,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The Maltese Falcon”) and some less predictable recent films (the first two “Toy Story” movies).

One member of the club? “Paddington 2,” the children’s film about a bear who, according to the review site, “spreads joy and marmalade wherever he goes.” Its writer and director, Paul King, told The Hollywood Reporter that he while he was pleased the film was on the list, he would not take it edging out “Citizen Kane” too seriously. “I won’t let it go too much to my head and immediately build my Xanadu,” he said.

Rotten Tomatoes, which may soon take the critical scores of more classics down to earth as older archival reviews are added to the site, has previously acknowledged that members of the “100% Club” aren’t necessarily perfect.

“It’s a tough road for a movie to get a 100% with critics, fraught with peril,” a page on the site devoted to the paragons of perfect percentage says. “What if a small plot hole is big enough to irk a persnickety reviewer? What if the cinematographer didn’t show up that one day for a crucial scene? What if there was a bum performance from one of the background extras?”

The Mae Tinee take on “Citizen Kane” was a minority opinion at the time.

“In spite of some disconcerting lapses and strange ambiguities in the creation of the principal character,” the critic Bosley Crowther wrote in The New York Times after attending the film’s 1941 premiere at the Palace Theater, “‘Citizen Kane’ is far and away the most surprising and cinematically exciting motion picture to be seen here in many a moon.”

“As a matter of fact,” he added, “It comes close to being the most sensational film ever made in Hollywood.”

The film was also the recent inspiration for Netflix’s “Mank,” a biopic of the “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, which starred Gary Oldman and won two Oscars on Sunday (but which the critics aggregated by Rotten Tomatoes rated only 83 percent Fresh).

Citizen Kane loses 100 per cent Rotten Tomatoes rating - Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal

rotten.indah.link

'Paddington 2' is now rated the greatest ever film on Rotten Tomatoes after 'Citizen Kane' lost its 100 per cent rating on the review-aggregator website.

Orson Welles' 1941 drama - which examines the life and legacy of publishing magnate Charles Foster Kane, played by Welles himself, a character inspired by American media barons William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer and Chicago tycoons Samuel Insull and Harold McCormick - held the honour for many years but its rating slipped after a negative review from 80 years ago was added to the site.

'Citizen Kane' - widely considered by critics to be one of the greatest movies of all-time - now has a 99 per cent rating and has now been surpassed by 2017 children's film 'Paddington 2', which is based on Michael Bond's literary character Paddington Bear, as the best rated movie.

The negative review added was first published in The Chicago Tribune newspaper in May 1941 and was titled 'Citizen Kane Fails to Impress Critic as Greatest Ever Filmed'.

The assessment of the movie reads: "It's interesting. It's different. In fact, it's bizarre enough to become a museum piece.

"But its sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of distinction and general entertainment value."

The dip in the movie's rating was first noticed by Twitter user @Caulimovirus in a post that has since received nearly 21,000 likes.

They wrote: "Rotten Tomatoes literally dug up an 80 year old negative review of 'Citizen Kane' and now the movie no longer has a 100 per cent fresh rating."

'Citizen Kane' has recently come to public attention after the release of David Fincher's movie 'Mank', which tells the story of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his development of the film's screenplay.

Amanda Seyfried starred in the flick as Marion Davies and admits she was challenged by the director's rigorous demands.

The 35-year-old actress said: "It was definitely hard. But at the same time, it's like theatre in that you have the luxury of really nailing the tone and the emotion. It does feel like 'Groundhog Day', in a way, but that's how he captures things that most people don't."

'Citizen Kane' Loses Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Thanks to Resurfaced 80-Year-Old Review - Hollywood Reporter

rotten.indah.link

Rotten Tomatoes has unearthed a 1941 review of Orson Welles' classic that single-handedly took down its decades-long perfect critics' score.

People will think "what I tell them to think," Charles Foster Kane famously declared in Citizen Kane.

And for decades, many critics and film scholars thought Orson Welles' 1941 film was hands-down the Best Movie Ever Made.

Accordingly, the black-and-white drama's 100 percent "Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes has likewise long reflected that honor.

But not anymore.

Citizen Kane's score across 116 reviews has been reduced to a mere 99 percent "Fresh."

The ranking slip is due to a single negative review that was recently unearthed by Rotten Tomatoes as part of the site's Archival Project, which focuses on resurrecting critics and publications of the past and adding archived reviews to classic films. The project discovered a Citizen Kane review that ran in the Chicago Tribune in 1941 and is only available online as a scanned newspaper clipping. Last month, the review was quietly added to Kane's page.

The review's headline is incredibly on point, given the circumstances: "Citizen Kane Fails to Impress Critic as Greatest Ever Filmed."

If that sounds like somebody went to the theater with rather high expectations, the review confirms as much. "You've heard a lot about this picture and I see by the ads that some experts think it 'the greatest movie ever made,'" reads the review. "I don't. It's interesting. It's different. In fact, it's bizarre enough to become a museum piece. But its sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of distinction and general entertainment value." The review went on to pan the film's iconic use of shadow ("it gives me the creeps and I kept wishing they'd let a little sunshine in"), yet praised Welles in the title role ("a zealous and effective performer").

The critic apparently didn't put their real name on the piece, but, as Boing-Boing pointed out, used the common-at-the-time pseudonym Mae Tinée (say it aloud). But whoever wrote it managed to pen a bomb that took 80 years to effectively detonate and blow up Citizen Kane's perfect score. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the first Citizen Kane reviews were added to the site in 2000 and the film most likely had a consistent 100 percent score for the past two decades — until Mr./Ms. Tinée's dismissive takedown was discovered.

For the record, The Hollywood Reporter has been around for 91 years and back in 1941 thought Citizen Kane was pretty damn good.

Here are some movies that — by the rules of Rotten Tomatoes gladiatorial review ranking combat — are officially Better Than Citizen Kane by virtue of having perfect 100 percent scores along with at least 40 reviews: The Terminator, Toy Story, Paddington 2, Before Sunrise, Man on Wire (they're along with the usual classic film school staples that you expect to find in the 100 percent club, such as Frankenstein, The Grapes of Wrath, The Maltese Falcon and Battleship Potemkin).

The news comes on the heels of Netflix's Mank, a biopic about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, scoring a somewhat disappointing two Oscars on Sunday. The anonymous Chicago Tribune critic passingly mentioned Mankiewicz in their review, but apparently didn't have any strong feelings about him either way.

‘Citizen Kane’ Loses Its Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score After 1941 Negative Review Resurfaces - IndieWire

rotten.indah.link

Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” is widely regarded as the greatest movie ever made, but it no longer has its 100% score on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s perfect score was broken last month after Rotten Tomatoes added a negative review published by the Chicago Tribune almost 80 years ago on May 7, 1941. The 80-year-old review was the 116th review added to the “Citizen Kane” Rotten Tomatoes page and was the one negative review that ruined Welles’ perfect score.

The Chicago Tribune’s negative “Citizen Kane” review was published under the pseudonym “Mae Tinee” and accompanied with the headline “Citizen Kane Fails to Impress Critic as Greatest Ever Filmed.” The review was published a few days after “Citizen Kane” first started rolling out into theaters in 1941. The critic branded the movie “a flop” and wrote that the film’s noir-inspired visuals and use of shadows “gives one the creeps.”

“It’s interesting. It’s different. In fact, it’s bizarre enough to become a museum piece,” the review reads. “But its sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of distinction and general entertainment value.”

Why did Rotten Tomatoes suddenly add an 80-year-old film review to the “Citizen Kane” page? A source close to the website tells IndieWire the upload was made in tandem with Rotten Tomatoes’ previously-announced launch of the RT Archives, an archival hub introduced in November 2020 which houses and preserves editorial content related to classic and historic film. The website announced at the time that classic films such as “A Night at the Opera,” “Double Indemnity,” “Home of the Brave,” “Victim,” “Mädchen in Uniform,” “The Dirty Dozen,” and “Gilda” all got issued new Tomatometer scores as part of the archival initiative.

As part of the archival project, led by review-curation manager Tim Ryan, Rotten Tomatoes also collected reviews for 100 lost films. It is estimated that between 75 and 90 percent of films made before 1929 are either lost or only exist in incomplete form.

“Citizen Kane” remained a topic of discussion throughout the most recent Oscar season thanks to David Fincher’s 10-time nominee and two-time winner “Mank,” which focuses on “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. The movie’s script marked the sole Oscar win for “Citizen Kane,” as it famously lost best picture to John Ford’s family drama “How Green Was My Valley.” Since “Mank” won Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Production Design, it walked home with more Oscars than “Citizen Kane” itself.

The Best TV Shows of 2021 - Rotten Tomatoes

rotten.indah.link

For a year that’s only a few months old, 2021 has already given us a wealth of quality television. For starters, the year’s first three 100% Certified Fresh seasons premiered just weeks into the new year — HBO docuseries The Lady and the Dale and the second seasons of Apple TV+’s Dickinson in January and For All Mankind in February. We’re betting there will be a few more additions to Rotten Tomatoes’ 100% Club before the year is through.

On top of those stellar showings, the first two (of many) Marvel Cinematic Universe TV series in the works for Disney+ made an impressive splash when WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally premiered.

Looking for more critic-approved TV series to add to your viewing queue? This list should help. We’ve rounded up all of the Certified Fresh TV and streaming series that have premiered in 2021 so far — that means seasons that scored at least 75% Fresh on the Tomatometer, with at least 20 critic reviews (five of those from Top Critics). Note: Shows retain their Certified Fresh status even if they fall below that threshold, as long as the scores stay at 70% or above.

To break any ties, seasons that have the same score are then ranked by the overall number of reviews (season only or season and episodic scores together where episodic reviews can be counted). Ties between seasons with the same score and the same number of reviews are broken by the average rating out of 10 found under “See Score Details” link beneath their Tomatometer scores on each season’s page.

Need more suggestions? Check out our comprehensive list of the best TV and streaming shows of 2020 — there are a whopping 129 Certified Fresh TV seasons on last year’s list.

Ever since 1979, when Ridley Scott blasted the haunted house formula into deep space, the Alien franchise has been synonymous with brooding atmosphere, strong female leads, eye-covering gore, grotesquely magnificent set design (as originally envisioned by H.R. Giger), and films that just overall ooze with style, along with whatever else that drips out of a Xenomorph’s mouth. In 1986, James Cameron turned the series into an action epic; subsequently, any sequel that tries the same route now gets called the Aliens of whatever franchise. David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet had their controversial and trouble moment in the series, and then two Rotten Predator-related spinoffs convinced Scott to return with mythological prequel Prometheus and back-to-basics Covenant. See how they all stack as we rank all Alien movies by Tomatomter!

#8

Adjusted Score: 13.952%

Critics Consensus: The increased gore and violence over the first Alien vs. Predator can't excuse Requiem's disorientating editing, excessively murky lighting, and lack of new ideas.

Synopsis: Visual effects specialists Greg and Colin Strause both make their feature directorial debut with this no-holds-barred monster mash that attempts... [More]

#7

Adjusted Score: 23.904%

Critics Consensus: Gore without scares and cardboard cut-out characters make this clash of the monsters a dull sit.

Synopsis: Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, Alien vs. Predator follows billionaire Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen) and his team of drillers,... [More]

#6

Adjusted Score: 49.16%

Critics Consensus: Alien3 takes admirable risks with franchise mythology, but far too few pay off in a thinly scripted sequel whose stylish visuals aren't enough to enliven a lack of genuine thrills.

Synopsis: Crash landing on a barren penal-colony planet with an unwelcomed visitor in tow, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) contends with a group... [More]

#5

Adjusted Score: 58.804%

Critics Consensus: Alien Resurrection marks a slight improvement over its predecessor, but still lacks the emotional stakes that helped make the franchise's first two entries sci-fi/horror classics.

Synopsis: Two centuries after Ellen Ripley's death, doctors aboard the space station Auriga clone her using a blood sample taken from... [More]

#4

Adjusted Score: 82.346%

Critics Consensus: Alien: Covenant delivers another satisfying round of close-quarters deep-space terror, even if it doesn't take the saga in any new directions.

Synopsis: Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The... [More]

#3

Adjusted Score: 84.785%

Critics Consensus: Ridley Scott's ambitious quasi-prequel to Alien may not answer all of its big questions, but it's redeemed by its haunting visual grandeur and compelling performances -- particularly Michael Fassbender as a fastidious android.

Synopsis: Ridley Scott, director of Alien and Blade Runner, returns to the genre he helped define. With Prometheus, he creates a... [More]

#2

Adjusted Score: 103.991%

Critics Consensus: While Alien was a marvel of slow-building, atmospheric tension, Aliens packs a much more visceral punch, and features a typically strong performance from Sigourney Weaver.

Synopsis: Big-budget special effects, swiftly paced action, and a distinct feminist subtext from writer/director James Cameron turned what should have been... [More]

#1

Adjusted Score: 109.716%

Critics Consensus: A modern classic, Alien blends science fiction, horror and bleak poetry into a seamless whole.

Synopsis: "In space, no one can hear you scream." A close encounter of the third kind becomes a Jaws-style nightmare when... [More]
