Kevin Kline's 10 Best Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes - Screen Rant

Kevin Kline is recognized as one of the greatest film and stage actors of his generation. Since 1978, Kline has won three Tony Awards for his theatrical work and has five Golden Globes nominations for his film acting. In 1989, Kline won the only Oscar Award that he's been nominated for following his performance in the classic comedy A Fish Called Wanda.

Kline currently has four feature films in postproduction, including The Diary, written and directed by Jackie Chan, and Here Today, written and directed by Billy Crystal. In anticipation of both projects, here are Kevin Kline's greatest movies, based on their ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

10 Grand Canyon (1991) - 77%

Of the twelve movies that Lawrence Kasdan directed in his career, Kline has starred in six of them. They include The Big Chill, Silverado, French Kiss, I Love You To Death, and Darling Companion. However, the only one of them to crack Kline's 10 best movies, according to Rotten Tomatoes, is the 1991 comedy Grand Canyon.

The multinarrative film concerns the lives of six seemingly unrelated strangers who continuously cross paths while living in Los Angeles. Kline plays Mack, an immigration lawyer who is nearly robbed when his car breaks down. Rescued by truck-driver Simon (Danny Glover), the two forge an unlikely bond despite their different backgrounds.

9 Sophie's Choice (1982) - 78%

Meryl Streep won the second Oscar of her illustrious career for her turn in Sophie's Choice, in which she starred opposite Kevin Kline. The Alan J. Pakula film poses the toughest question a mother can possibly conceive.

Sophie (Streep) is a PTSD-ridden Holocaust survivor desperate to leave her scars behind with new American Jewish suitor Nathan (Kline). Through unthinkable circumstances, Sophie is given an ultimatum that forces her to choose one of her two remaining children to keep and which one she'll send to die.

8 Cry Freedom (1987) - 79%

In Richard Attenborough's epic drama Cry Freedom, Kline plays South African journalist Donald Woods. Woods spends much of his career writing critical editorials about Steve Biko (Denzel Washington), a black activist who he deems too destructive to help end apartheid.

When Biko is murdered in police custody, Woods changes course and writes an expose about Biko's life. Woods' life is endangered in the attempt to publish the book, forcing him to flee South Africa and publish the truth elsewhere.

7 The Pirates Of Penzance (1983) - 81%

Kline not only played The Pirate King in the stage production of The Pirates of Penzance, but he also appeared in the 1980 TV-movie version of the play as well as the 1983 big-screen adaptation.

Based on Gilbert and Sullivan's classic stage play, the swashbuckling romantic comedy follows a young pirate whose occupation on the high-seas becomes a major obstacle between him and his beloved Mabel Stanley (Linda Ronstadt). Ronstadt earned a Golden Globe nomination for the film, which marked her big-screen debut.

6 Looking For Richard (1996) - 81%

Directed by Al Pacino, Looking for Richard is a heartfelt celebration of William Shakespeare's Richard III, which the iconic actor has famously portrayed on the stage. The movie features several broadway and film stars who have experience with the play, including Kline, Alec Baldwin, Winona Ryder, Kenneth Branagh, and more.

The film fuses footage of the actors rehearsing, performing, and discussing the play in depth. Pacino won a Director's Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary.

5 A Prairie Home Companion (2006) - 82%

In Robert Altman's final film A Prairie Home Companion, Kline plays the bumbling master of ceremonies Guy Noir in the stage adaptation of the long-running titular radio program.

Written by Garrison Keillor, the film takes place during the final broadcast of the famed Americana radio variety show in which a slew of eccentric acts and characters take the stage. Among them include singing cowboys Dusty (Woody Harrelson) and Lefty (John C. Reilly), sisters Rhonda (Lily Tomlin), and Yolanda (Meryl Streep), and many more.

4 The Ice Storm (1997) - 85%

Based on the Rick Moody novel, Ang Lee's The Ice Storm is a period drama in which a bevy of interwoven suburbanites confront past scars and future angst during Thanksgiving weekend.

Set in 1973 Connecticut, much of the drama revolves around the Hood family. Ben Hood (Kline) is a drunken liar whose wife Elena (Joan Allen) is losing her patience with him. Their son Paul (Tobey Maquire) is home for the holiday, while daughter Wendy (Christina Ricci) gets into adolescent trouble. When an ice storm hits town, irreparable tragedy strikes the family.

3 Creating A Character: The Moni Yakim Legacy (2020) - 88%

After a three year absence from the big-screen, Kline returned in 2020 with the documentary Creating a Character: The Moni Yakim Legacy that was released on June 19th.

The film honors the professional contributions of Moni Yakim, one of Julliard's most famous acting professors. Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Mackie, Laura Linney, Michael Stuhlbarg, and many more join Kline to beam about Yakim's influence on their growth as screen and stage performers.

2 A Fish Called Wanda (1988) - 94%

Kline won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor following his turn as Otto in A Fish Called Wanda, a foul-mouthed vulgarian who thinks he's far smarter than he actually is.

The film concerns a diamond heist conducted by four wildly different people in London. Otto and his conniving sister Wanda (Jamie Lee Curtis) try to play English barrister Archie (John Cleese) and his stuttering pal Ken (Michael Palin) for fools, but the British blokes have their own coy schemes to ensure the loot ends up in their hands.

1 Dave (1993) - 95%

According to Rotten Tomatoes, Dave is the highest-rated movie of Kevin Kline's career thus far. Directed by Ivan Reitman, the comedic case of mistaken identity co-stars Sigourney Weaver, Frank Langella, Ving Rhames, and Sir Ben Kingsley.

Kline takes center stage as Dave, a staid temp agency operator who happens to be a dead ringer for the President of the United States. When President Mitchell (also played by Kline) suffers a massive stroke, Dave is asked to pose as the President indefinitely. Over time, Dave proves to be an even more capable leader than President Mitchell ever was.
