12 Films That Surprisingly Have A 0% Rating On Rotten Tomatoes - Screen Rant

rotten.indah.link

Sometimes, films that have gone down in history as being some of the most notable ones of their generation don't end up that way for the right reasons. Though these films go on to become cult classics, it's usually for no other reason than they are so bad that they're kind of good.

Rotten Tomatoes is one of the premier review aggregator sites that tells viewers what films are worth watching and which ones aren't. But, sometimes, they get it wrong, and sometimes the ratings totally surprise you. Here are 12 films that viewers expected, for one reason or another, to be successful. Yet they have all maintained 0% ratings, meaning not a single critic liked it. Judge for yourself if these flicks really deserved to be so heavily panned.

12 Staying Alive (1983)

Despite starring John Travolta at his peak and serving as a sequel to the tremendously popular film Saturday Night Fever from 1977, this film was universally panned. Named after the Bee Gees tune, the dance musical told the story of Tony trying to make it as a professional dancer.

The movie, directed by Sylvester Stallone, did well at the box office, but critics slaughtered it. They even went so far as to call it "shockingly embarrassing" and "unnecessary."

11 Jaws: The Revenge (1987)

Given how iconic the film Jaws is, one would think that any film within this Steven Spielberg franchise would be a hit. But, alas, that wasn't the case for this one, the fourth and final installment of the prolonged series.

It was seemingly rushed, taking only nine months to make, whereas the others were filmed over a period of two years. This led to laughable visual effects that were even awarded the Golden Raspberry for being the worst of any film that year. The consensus: it was a "sorry chapter in a once-proud franchise."

10 Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987)

Anyone who grew up in the 80s knows the Police Academy films as ones that could make you laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of them. In this one, the focus is on recent Police Academy graduates who must train a new crop of recruited officers.

Marking David Spade's feature film debut and with a cast headed up by Steve Guttenberg, it was given the worst commentary that a comedy film could possibly get: "unfunny."

9 Problem Child (1990)

Even comedy legend John Ritter couldn't save this black comedy from getting two thumbs down from just about anyone who spent the hour and 20 minutes watching it, thinking his involvement would equate to great movie.

When a couple adopts a seven-year-old, they discover that he is a terrible, mischievous kid with a serial killer as a pen pal. Interestingly, while the movie was called "mean-spirited," the pull of Ritter and others like Michael Richards and Gilbert Gottfried still made it a box office success, and the fact that it was followed up by two sequels in 1991 and 1995 make it all the more surprising that the film has a 0% rating.

8 Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991)

This one might not be so surprising as a romantic adventure film that would make anyone cringe about two kids stuck on a tropical island who grow up together and eventually fall in love.

It was not only given a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it also completely bombed at the box office, bringing in less than it cost to make. What makes the failure so surprising is that the initial 1980 film was a box office success, though it was also admittedly panned by critics.

7 A Low Down Dirty Shame (1994)

Keenan Ivory Wayans hit it out of the park with his sketch comedy series In Living Color. But, his film follow-up surprisingly did not match that same level of quality. Starring Wayans himself along with Charles D. Dutton, Jada Pinkett, and Salli Richardson, it was about a former LAPD detective who works as a private investigator and heads out on a journey for revenge.

The critic consensus calls the movie a "trifecta of failure" for Wayans, who not only starred in the film but also wrote and directed it. One reviewer comically references its title as a fitting description for the movie itself.

6 Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)

One would think that Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu in an action thriller with plenty of choreographed fight scenes would be a winning combination. This film was released at the height of action thrillers dominating the box office like The Bourne Identity and Minority Report. But, it was didn't fall into the well-reviewed category despite the impressive cast.

Banderas and Liu star as secret agents from different sides who join forces to take down a common enemy. The movie not only performed terribly at the box office, failing to even bring in the cost to make it, but Ecks vs. Sever has often been called one of the worst movies ever made.

5 The Nutcracker in 3D (2010)

The Nutcracker is a classic Christmas musical fantasy thriller that began as—and continues to be—a tremendously popular ballet. So, the idea of a movie sounded great, but this attempt was a really bad idea, and it didn't exactly get the warm welcome many thought it would.

The 3D movie, which starred Elle Fanning, Nathan Lane, and John Turturro, was criticized for just about every aspect, from the story to the performances, weird visuals, and implications that the rats in the film were similar to the Nazis.

4 The Ridiculous 6 (2015)

Adam Sandler and Native American extras in The Ridiculous Six

It seems whenever Adam Sandler makes a film, it goes one of two ways: universally loved or universally panned. This one fell into the latter character. With an ensemble cast that included Sandler along with Terry Crews, Jorge Garcia, Taylor Lautner, Rob Schneider, and Luke Wilson, it was about six men who discover they all have the same father, a bank robber (Nick Nolte), and decide to go find him.

The Netflix film has been called "lazily offensive," though it's admittedly one of those Sandler films that some fans will love—the movie has a 34% audience score.

3 Cabin Fever (2016)

Not to be confused with the 2002 Eli Roth horror-comedy, which has a decent 62% rating, there were high hopes for this horror remake, which involved Roth once again, seeing as the first one did pretty well. Sadly, it should have remained shelved.

Five friends rent a cabin in the woods and are attacked by a forest-dwelling hermit who was sprayed by the blood of his dog that died from a mysterious illness. The most hilarious assessment? "No need for a quarantine—enthusiasm for this insert remake is not contagious."

2 Gotti (2018)

The second film to feature John Travolta on this list, this role comes 35 years later in a biographical crime film about the notorious mobster. The film was in the making for many years prior to its release, and, with Travolta attached along with a compelling story, it had some potential.

But, when Gotti finally came out, it was a total failure, grossing only $6 million on a $10 million budget. While the film did receive some praise for its make-up work, it received six Razzie nominations, including one for Worst Picture and Worst Actor for Travolta.

1 A Thousand Words (2012)

Usually, Eddie Murphy in a movie means comedy gold and box office success. But, surprisingly, this film was the exception to that rule. The comedy-drama took four years to be released in theaters, which should have been the first hint that it was probably not going to live up to Murphy's other movie roles.

But, here's the clincher: the story is about Jack, a chatty literary agent who says whatever necessary to get book deals. But, a New Age self-help guru, who is on to his lying ways, puts a sort of curse on him that causes a leaf to fall from a tree every time Jack speaks a word. When the tree is out of leaves, Jack will die. A movie where Eddie Murphy can't talk? No thanks.
