The 5 Best Netflix Original Movies (& The 5 Worst), According To Rotten Tomatoes - Screen Rant

Netflix has become one of the biggest companies of the 2010s. Before, streaming shows and movies over the Internet seemed like a pipe dream. Now, it's a reality. Fortunately, Netflix is quite liberal when it comes to spending money, and they have dumped an incredible amount of money into picking up some fantastic movies for their service.

Of course, they can't all be winners. Netflix also contains its fair share of duds, and the critics aren't afraid of letting them know.

10 Best: The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs (2018) - 90%

Serving as the latest Coen Brothers masterpiece, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is one of Netflix's most well-known original films. The movie was produced by Annapurna Pictures and Mike Zoss Productions, with Netflix providing a worldwide distribution. Like all Coen Brothers movies, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was critically acclaimed, scoring a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and three Academy Award nominations - Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Song for "When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings."

9 Worst: Sextuplets (2019) - 14%

Marlon Wayans is a very divisive figure, creating hilarious and abysmal films in equal measure. Unfortunately, Sextuplets was one of the latter. This movie concerns Wayans, playing seven different people (Eddie Murphy style) as a series of sextuplets. While the movie only has fourteen reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, only two are positive - creating a score of just 14%. The critical consensus calls the film "lazy, messy, and deeply unfunny."

8 Best: Marriage Story (2019) - 94%

2019 was the year that Netflix came out with all guns blazing. They were serious about becoming a reputable movie distributor, and they accumulated serious talent to ensure they had solid clout come awards season. One of the results was Marriage Story, a touching and hilarious look at the reluctant dissolution of a marriage. The movie earned widespread acclaim, securing a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and generating a solid six Academy Award nominations and one win (Laura Dern for Best Supporting Actress).

7 Worst: Brain On Fire (2016) - 13%

Brain on Fire is what happens when a serious Netflix film suffers a major misfire. The talent was certainly there, as the film stars the likes of Chloë Grace Moretz, Jenny Slate, and Carrie-Ann Moss.

It also tells a "dramatic," Oscar-baity story about a writer suffering from a mysterious neurological condition and the Syrian-American neurologist who tries to save her. Unfortunately, the movie was roasted by professional critics, many of whom lambasted Moretz's performance and the TV "medical disaster of the week" story akin to an episode of House.

6 Best: Roma (2018) - 95%

Roma is a history-making film that put Netflix on the map. Before Roma, no one in the industry paid much attention to Netflix and their films. After, it was clear that Netflix would be an annual staple at awards shows. Roma is the first Mexican film to win the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film and the first foreign-language film to win for Best Director. It led that particular Academy Awards with ten nominations (tied with The Favourite), including Best Picture. With Roma, Netflix certified itself as a serious contender and proved that serious "films" could be found on the internet.

5 Worst: Father Of The Year (2018) - 0%

Netflix has found a nice little niche — that niche being wacky, brainless comedies starring the likes of David Spade and Adam Sandler. It really is a perfect home for these types of movies, as they would never be played in cinemas today. Father of the Year stars David Spade as the dimwitted Wayne, who is pitted in a fight against a scientist named Mardy. Despite counting just eleven reviews, Father of the Year didn't earn a single positive one, resulting in the rare but always-funny 0% goose egg. It's not the only Netflix film to do so.

4 Best: The Irishman (2019) - 96%

The Irishman was another of Netflix's showstoppers of 2019. Netflix wasn't fooling around with this one — they put in an astounding $250 million to get the film made, which included rounding up an all-star cast of legendary actors and filmmakers (and dragging Joe Pesci out of retirement).

The result was one of the most beloved gangster films of all time, a loving ode to both the genre and the legacy of Martin Scorsese (and his actors, of course). The movie received a stellar ten nominations at the 2020 Academy Awards, but it failed to win any.

3 Worst: The Ridiculous 6 (2015) - 0%

The Ridiculous 6 is one of the most popular Adam Sandler films on Netflix (and also one of the first). This movie was quite notable at the time, as it signified that Netflix could attain such as big a name as Adam Sandler. Unfortunately, the film squandered any and all potential that it may have had. Like Father of the Year, The Ridiculous 6 holds a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus calling it "Every bit as lazily offensive as its cast and concept would suggest." It also carries a 34% user score, indicating that general audiences didn't seem to care for it, either.

2 Best: Dolemite Is My Name (2019) - 97%

The Irishman dragged Joe Pesci out of retirement, just as Dolemite Is My Name did for Eddie Murphy. The movie was highly anticipated for that very reason, and it did not disappoint. Murphy played Rudy Ray Moore, a beloved director of corny blaxploitation films. Most of the movie's praise centered around Murphy's performance, although he failed to earn an Academy Award nomination (in one of the biggest snubs of all time). In fact, it didn't earn a single Oscar nomination, resulting in some serious outcry from critics and movie lovers alike.

1 Worst: True Memoirs Of An International Assassin (2016) - 0%

This is another movie generated from the famous Netflix-Sandler deal, as this one stars his good buddy Kevin James. James stars as Sam Larson, a fiction writer who must imbibe his own fictional creation and pretend that he's some sort of badass secret agent. Like most of James's movies, True Memoirs Of An International Assassin was lambasted by all professional critics, resulting in a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It didn't bode well for Netflix as a serious contender in the movie market. Luckily, they would eventually get their act together.
