The Boys Season 2 premieres next week on Amazon, bringing back the eponymous group of misfits tasked with keeping sociopathic superheroes in line as the personal stakes between rivals Billy Butcher and Homelander escalates.
The early reviews for Season 2 are in, averaging at an impressive 89% professional critics' score on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing. While this score is expected to change as more reviews come in ahead of the season's Sept. 4 premiere date, this is better than last year's first season, which earned a critics' score of 84%.
CBR's own advance review of Season 2 called it "a fantastic follow-up," praising the television adaptation for finding "bold new directions to challenge its characters in big ways," as Butcher leads his team to face off against an increasingly unhinged Homelander.
Amazon announced in July that it had officially renewed The Boys for a third season, with writing and casting already underway for the follow-up. Showrunner Eric Kripke has since revealed that principal photography for Season 3 is currently slated to begin in January 2021, with the production already planning to take additional safety precautions due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Amazon's official synopsis for Season 2 of The Boys is below:
The even more intense, more insane season two finds The Boys on the run from the law, hunted by the Supes, and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought. In hiding, Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) try to adjust to a new normal, with Butcher (Karl Urban) nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) must navigate her place in The Seven as Homelander (Antony Starr) sets his sights on taking complete control. His power is threatened with the addition of Stormfront (Aya Cash), a social-media-savvy new Supe, who has an agenda of her own. On top of that, the Supervillain threat takes center stage and makes waves as Vought seeks to capitalize on the nation’s paranoia.
Amazon Studios' The Boys stars Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid as Hughie, Laz Alonso as Mother's Milk, Tomer Kapon as Frenchie, Karen Fukuhara as the Female, Erin Moriarty as Annie January, Chace Crawford as the Deep, Antony Starr as Homelander, Aya Cash as Stormfront and Simon Pegg as Hughie's dad. Season 2 premieres Sept. 4 on Amazon Prime Video.
