Community: Every Season Ranked (According To Rotten Tomatoes) - Screen Rant

There might not have been a more creative and clever comedy series of the past decade or so than Community. Airing for five seasons on NBC and one on Yahoo! Screen, the show was often met with widespread critical acclaim for its writing, acting, and just about every other aspect. The only thing the show lacked was a large following.

That being said, it had a passionate fanbase. They voted Community to win contests at TV Guide and a partnership with Subway helped keep the show running. There's even a podcast run by some of its stars now. The critics over at Rotten Tomatoes have reviewed each season and it's pretty interesting to see which ones ended up as the best and which were considered the worst.

6 Season 4 (65%)

This probably doesn't come as a surprise to fans of the series. The fourth season of Community was met with a mixed reaction at best. Critics gave it 65% positive reviews, while fan reception was even lower at a mere 57%. It was in this season that creator Dan Harmon was canned, so it was run by other folks. That proved to be a problem for most of the hardcore audience.

Harmon's brand of comedy is what made Community work so well in the first place. Without it, the show suffered. Episodes like "Economics of Marine Biology" and "Intro to Felt Surrogacy" missed the mark, while things like the Britta/Troy romance weren't liked. The show still featured plenty of funny moments and solid comedy but it didn't feel like the Community fans knew and loved.

After its fifth season, Community was ultimately canceled by NBC due to a lack of viewers. However, the fans were indeed a passionate bunch. Their voices were heard and a sixth season was surprisingly picked up by Yahoo! Screen. This allowed the show to change somewhat, as there were no longer confined to the restrictions of network television. This new season let them get edgier in a handful of ways.

It also had to deal with some changes. With Pierce and Troy already gone from the show, they also had to replace Shirley, who only appeared in a single episode this season. In came Elroy and Frankie, who filled in admirably. The show delivered some great episodes like "Modern Espionage" and an outstanding finale in "Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television," while also bringing in quality guest stars to make it all work. The audience score is an improved 85%. Fans got the six seasons, now they're just waiting on the movie.

4 Season 1 (90%)

Annie, Britta, and Shirley

Looking back, you can tell that Community took a bit of time to get its footing. While "Pilot," "Spanish 101," and other early episodes were good, they didn't quite have that flair the series would become known for. Still, it didn't take long for the show to learn what it would be and that led to a great debut season. 90% of the Rotten Tomatoes reviews are positive, while 96% of fans enjoyed it.

This was where everyone was introduced to the study group. Jeff started the entire thing just to potentially hook up with Britta but Jeff, and every other member, grew by season's end. Episodes like "Contemporary American Poultry," "Comparative Religion," and "Romantic Expressionism" were great but things peaked with "Modern Warfare," the first paintball episode. The show proved that it would nail parodies and paying homage to pop culture icons.

3 Season 3 (91%)

Annie, Britta, and Shirley with Pierce

Community had a lot to live up to by its third season. Shows have a tendency to experience a dip in quality by the time the middle seasons come around. Thankfully, Community managed to take its biggest risks yet and almost always hit it out of the park. With a 91% rating and an even better 97% from fans, it was clear that most people loved what the show put out during this season.

This season saw arguably the best episode in history, "Remedial Chaos Theory," which dealt with alternate timelines. There were also tremendous installments focusing on documentary-style filmmaking, a musical in the vein of Glee, a perfect Law & Order: SVU parody, and an entire episode done in the style of a video game. Also, the storyline involving Chang was over the top in the best possible way.

2 Season 5 (93%)

Troy and Abed playing "Floor is Lava"

Following the disappointment that was the fourth season, Dan Harmon was brought back in to regain control of his show. His vision returned and Chevy Chase was out after some backstage issues with fellow cast and crew members. Harmon was just what the show needed, as he brought back his trademark brand of comedy and delivered some of the strongest episodes in series history.

Fans (94%) and critics (93%) alike adored this season. The show found a clever way to bring the study group together after they all graduated. This season dealt with the departure of Troy, done in two spectacular episodes ("Cooperative Polygraphy" and "Geothermal Escapism"), while also delivering a quality sequel to their Dungeons & Dragons episode and even doing one in the style of G.I. Joe. The final two episodes weren't as good as some other finales but still saw the zany shenanigans folks wanted.

1 Season 2 (100%)

Troy, Abed and Annie covered in paint

Nothing beats Community season two. With a perfect 100% rating from critics and 98% from audiences, it was nearly perfect. As noted, it took the show a short while to really get going and season two was clearly where it hit hits stride. Nearly every episode was fantastic. When you start with a guest appearance from Betty White that sees her rap alongside Troy and Abed, you know it's going to be something special.

The season also saw things like a KFC-themed rocket ship simulator, a zombie-like infestation set to ABBA, an incredible bottle episode surrounding a pen, conspiracy theories, a "clip show" to never before seen stories, a stop-motion Christmas tale, and an homage to Pulp Fiction. It was all topped with an outstanding two-part paintball finale with high stakes that was part-western, part-Star Wars epic. The whole season is Community at its finest.
