Disney's Mulan remake is rated Fresh in Rotten Tomatoes score - Digital Spy

Disney's Mulan may not be getting the cinematic release that it deserves, but that doesn't seem to have had an effect on the first reviews for the studio's latest live-action remake.

Following delays to its theatrical release as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Disney confirmed last month that Mulan would be skipping cinemas altogether, and would instead be released via Disney+ on its Premier Access service.

But while fans will now be settling down to watch Mulan on their sofas instead of at the cinema, it seems that they're still guaranteed a night of spectacular viewing, as the first critics' reviews for the film have been largely positive.

Taking inspiration from the original Ballad of Hua Mulan as well as the 1998 animated Disney film, Mulan stars Liu Yifei as a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to join the army in the place of her ageing father.

Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Gong Li, Jet Li and Tzi Ma also star in the film.

At the time of writing, Mulan is rated Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a rating of 79%, and many reviews have praised the film as a visual marvel and a worthy update to the animated original.

Here at Digital Spy we've given the film five stars, declaring the film "the best Disney remake yet". Read on for more of what the critics have to say:

Digital Spy

"But it is also a Disney movie, so the elements of wonder and mystery, of whimsy and love are still there. And the sense of surrealism that animation offers somehow manages to make its way into Mulan without feeling hamfisted, or like a full-on fantasy film.

"Mulan feels very realistic, because she is real. She is the life that so many people lead when they can't be who they really are, when they have to hide away their true power and personality. As Mulan soars, so does the viewer."

IGN

"Distinguishing itself from just about every other remake that Disney has produced in the last few years, the live-action Mulan makes a satisfying case for its own existence. Unlike 2019's slavishly faithful (and thus completely unnecessary) Lion King adaptation, or 2017's oddly lifeless Beauty and the Beast, director Niki Caro’s take on the iconic Chinese warrior is determined to tread new ground, even while taking care to hit many of the same emotional beats as its 1998 predecessor.

"With sweeping scale, spectacular action, and a dynamic lead in Yifei Liu, Disney's live-action Mulan updates the original in surprising, mostly-effective ways while still maintaining the spirit of its predecessor, making it the most confident Disney remake yet."

Radio Times

"With ingenious fight choreography, stunning filming locations and more innovation on display than in any previous animation update, Mulan is genuinely one of the best-looking live-action Disney films in a long while. There's a certain dark irony in that it's now the only one most fans won't be able to see in cinemas.

"The other downside? Somehow, the characters and story feel more flat than they did in two dimensions, which much of the wit, fun and characterisation of the original lost somewhere in translation."

The Guardian

"The most empowered Disney heroine of all has returned. Here is a rousing and forthright live-action remake of the 1998 Disney animation with a blue-chip cast, all about the female warrior in 4th-century China who disguises herself as a man and joins the army to fight an invasion threat against the emperor. The result is an entertaining if straightforwardly glossy action-adventure from the Disney workshop."

Vanity Fair

"Without the songs and silliness of the 1998 original, 2020's Mulan throws itself into comparison not with other children's classics, but with hundreds of other sword-and-sandal films that have all pretty much done what Mulan does before. Caro, filming in New Zealand and China, finds some stunning backdrops. The costumes look great. The martial arts sequences nicely approximate the fluid, floating grace of wuxia films. But somehow Mulan’s assets don’t coalesce into a thrilling whole.

"It's certainly significant that there is a big Disney film with a Chinese actor, Liu Yifei, as its star. But watching Mulan, one gets the sense that this triumph of representation was considered enough — like the job was done once casting was finished, and everything else was just mechanical detail. Mulan deserves better, as does Liu, as do eager audiences."

Mashable

"This version of Mulan is rich in visual detail and strenuously respectful in tone, too serious to bother with childish flourishes like a jokey musical number or a comic-sidekick dragon. But it's not curious enough to delve into the complications of its hero's heart, or venture into the thornier territory suggested by its themes."

The AV Club

"It's not a beat-for-beat re-creation or a joyless rehash of the animated original like last year's The Lion King or Aladdin; aspiring instead to a slightly more serious action-adventure saga, it throws out the talking dragons and catchy musical numbers. Yet this Mulan makes its adjustments while still aiming to be as widely palatable as possible, and in the process, ends up short on both character development and emotional heft.

"Rather than lean into the more mature elements that make it stand out, the movie does frustratingly little with its noteworthy upgrades on the original, resulting in a version of the story that’s only superficially more sophisticated."

The Hollywood Reporter

"Earlier this year, producer Jason Reed said that the remake was designed to appeal to both American and Chinese audiences. The result is a creatively squeamish, pokily paced movie by committee that has four credited screenwriters, a slew of hackneyed Disney tropes and an enervating lack of emotional resonance.

"No wonder it relies so heavily on the 1998 animated film for its musical cues — the nostalgia from the instrumental snippets of 'Reflection' are the only reason to feel anything. Despite all the splendour, there’s little sense of vision."

Mulan will premiere exclusively to Disney+ subscribers in selected countries on Friday, September 4. Premier Access to the movie is priced at £19.99 in the UK and $29.99 in the US.
