Jennifer Jason Leigh is one of the most talented actresses of her generation. In Paul Verhoeven's sword-and-sandals adventure film Flesh & Blood, Leigh plays the virginal daughter of a high-ranking aristocrat who becomes the victim of a kidnapping by a band of mercenaries.
Set in 1501 Italy, the story traces a mercenary who captures Agnes, assaults her, and then uses her to earn respect among his enemies as a way to infiltrate their ranks. However, Agnes uses her own wiles and inner-strength to mount a daring escape.
8 The Big Picture — 87%
In the midst of his string of well-received "mockumentary" films, Christopher Guest released a conventional narrative movie called The Big Picture in 1989. It stars Kevin Bacon as Nick Chapman, Hollywood hopeful who gets his big break, only to learn that nothing ever goes as planned in the ever-fickle industry as studio interference compromises his vision at every turn. Leigh plays Lydia Johnson, one of Nick's key collaborators.
7 Annihilation — 88%
In Alex Garland's hallucinatory sci-fi horror outing Annihilation, Leigh heads a team of interdisciplinary scientists into a cryptic environmental curio called the Zone. She's joined by Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, and Tuva Novotny.
As the team treks deep into the Zone to find answers about the fate of one of its own, they discover gravity-defying, unnatural flora and fauna mutations that seem to originate from a different world.
6 QT8: The First Eight — 91%
In the documentary retrospective on the first eight films made by Quentin Tarantino, Leigh is on hand to discuss her involvement in the latest of the bunch, The Hateful Eight.
Written and directed by Tara Wood, many of Tarantino's friends and frequent collaborators are on hand to beam about the filmmaking iconoclast. Leigh is joined by Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Foxx, Michael Madsen, and many others as they celebrate the first two decades of Tarantino's acclaimed career.
5 The Spectacular Now — 91%
In the highly-acclaimed coming-of-age tale The Spectacular Now, Miles Teller stars as alcoholic high-school senior Sutter Keely, who goes with the flow and lives only in the moment— until his lifestyle is upended when his girlfriend Cassidy dumps him. Leigh plays Sutter's mother, Sara.
Sutter awakes one morning in a drunken stupor in the front lawn of another girl's house, who is diametrically opposed to the types of girls he dates and ends up changing his outlook on relationships.
4 Anomalisa — 92%
Charlie Kaufman's stop-motion dramedy Anomalisa stars Leigh, David Thewlis, and Tom Noonan in a wildly unique tale of personal connection.
The film follows Michael (Thewlis), a customer service writer bored to death by the quotidian grind of his meager existence. Unable to express joy or to connect with people on a human level, Michael's life is thrown for a loop when he meets a stranger named Lisa (Leigh) on a business trip.

In Benny and Josh Safdie's gritty crime thriller Good Time, Robert Pattinson plays a low-level hood who goes to desperate lengths to keep his mentally-impaired brother out of jail following a botched bank heist.
Leigh plays Corey Ellman, Connie's (Pattinson) girlfriend who tries to help him get his brother Nick (Benny Safdie) out of prison. Connie convinces Corey to use her credit cards to pay off Nick's bail, but the plan is ruined when her mother cancels the cards and forces Connie to commit further crimes.
2 Short Cuts — 95%
Robert Altman's sprawling three-hour slice of life drama Short Cuts interweaves the stories of several suburbanites in Los Angeles. Leigh joins the star-studded ensemble that also includes Julianne Moore, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Lemmon, Lily Taylor, Matthew Modine, and many more.
Leigh plays Lois Kaiser, an adult phone line operator who works from home while her husband cleans pools for affluent clients in the valley.

Based on the Dorothy Allen book, the domestic drama concerns Anney (Leigh), an impoverished single mother who lives in South Carolina with her daughter Bone (Jena Malone). The relationship between the mother and daughter is severely tested upon the arrival of Glen (Ron Eldard), Anney's romantic interest who is also abusive to Bone.
