Where to watch ‘Tenet’: Movie theater guidelines, streaming options, Rotten Tomatoes score - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – It’s here. “Tenet”: The movie that will save the industry from the pandemic.

Okay, so that’s a bit overdramatic. But it’s not too much to say the success of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” could help determine how major film releases are distributed moving forward.

What is “Tenet” about?

“Tenet” involves a secret agent (played by John David Washington) who is tasked with preventing World War III through an organization (known as Tenet). In the process, he has to deal with “time inversion.” He also gets some help from the always lovable Robert Pattinson.

The plot is so mind-boggling, even if you read the entire Wikipedia spoilers, you probably still won’t understand what the heck this movie is about. And maybe that’s for the best.

Is it any good?

Since it’s a Christopher Nolan (“Inception,” “The Dark Knight”) movie, of course, it’s good. But as of mid-week “Tenet” has a rating of 78% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 68, which puts it below the usual Nolan standards meaning critics may have found the complex plot hard to follow.

Where can you watch it?

“Tenet” officially opens Thursday, Sept. 3. But some movie theaters are already hosting early access screenings, including several in Ohio. By the end of the week, most AMC, Regal, Cinemark and Marcus theaters will be open and show “Tenet.” BUT NOT ALL. You’ll want to check your local listings via Fandango.

Is it streaming?

Nope. You can’t watch “Tenet” on Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV, Amazon Prime or any other streaming service. It’s not on-demand either. Expect “Tenet” to be in theaters for at least a few months and then roll out on DVD and Blu-ray, possibly by Christmas. It won’t likely arrive on a streaming service until spring 2021 at the earliest.

Are people going to go see it?

“Tenet” had a strong opening overseas, taking in $53 million during its first weekend despite the pandemic. It could do roughly the same in the United States. “Dunkirk,” Nolan’s last movie, made just over $50 million in its first weekend in 2017. “Tenet” has more mainstream appeal, but also has the pandemic to deal with. So, don’t expect it to match Inception’s 2010 opening of $62 million.

Is there a post-credits scene?

No.

What are movie theater social distancing guidelines?

More than 370 movie theater chains are following the CinemaSafe program for reopening. That includes AMC, Regal, Alamo Drafthouse, and Cinemark. CinemaSafe guidelines include mandatory masks for employees and patrons, reduced capacity, increased ventilation, hand sanitizer stations, minimum cash transactions at concessions and a preference for online ticket sales. Act accordingly.
