Throughout the years, Netflix has produced some stellar and well-known crimes series which have garnered high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

10 Unbelievable (2019) 98%

Based on a true story, this 2019 show was released on Netflix telling the story of Marie Adler. Unbelievable follows the process a young female protagonist (Marie Adler),  who when she reports to be the victim of a heinous assault, is not believed. The protagonist is left to deal with the consequences of not being believed, living in her trauma. The series also delves into the difficulties of crime sex reporting and conviction. With a high rating of 98%, Rotten Tomatoes describes the show as “Heartbreaking and powerful, Unbelievable transcends familiar true-crime beats by shifting its gaze to survivors of abuse, telling their stories with grace and gravity”.

9 Mindhunter (2017) 98%

Mindhunter follows the story of FBI agents Ford and Tench as they solve crimes and catch serial killers. Mindhunter is a unique type of crime-solving series as it invites the audience to gauge what is inside the mind of a serial killer. This allows the audience and characters of the show to get an inside scope of a criminal’s mind, in search of answers and reasoning. Rotten Tomatoes have praised the show with a 98% rating for its ability to distinguish “itself in a crowded genre with ambitiously cinematic visuals and meticulous attention to character development”. Though it is yet to be announced if the series will continue, due to its success, a 3rd season renewal is highly likely.

8  Elite (2018) 97%

Elite is a high school drama series that touches on themes such as betrayal, wealth, justice, inequality, and murder. The show grew a large fan base due to the connections fans have with characters and most importantly it’s continuing plot-twists.  Following the lives of teenagers in Spain at the Las Encinas school, the show’s first season is based on the murder of student Marina Nunier Osuna and following seasons focus on the aftermath of her death and the impact it has on the Las Encinas community.  For a teen crime series, Elite exceeded viewers' expectations and holds a  97% rotten tomatoes rating.

7 Top Boy (2019) 95%

Top Boy was originally a show produced by Channel 4 but revived by Netflix in 2019, appealing to a new modern audience. Top Boy quickly became Netflix’s top shows specifically due to its production attachment from rapper Drake. The show also has appearances from British rap artists like Dave, Kano, and Little Simz.

6 Peaky Blinders (2013) 93%

From its release in 2013, Peaky Blinders has evolved to be one of the best crime shows on Netflix. Based in Birmingham, the show follows the lives of Thomas (Tommy) Shelby and his role as the leader of the notorious gang “The Peaky Blinders”. After WW1, The Peaky Blinders was formed with the aims of moving up in the world. With this, the Shelby family and the peaky blinders present thrill, drama and crime as the gang is seen in constant war with the authorities and other gang families. Rotten Tomatoes has described the show as a “post-war Britain that's as bloody and brutal as it is impressively immersive” with a 93% rating.

5  Money Heist (2017) 93%

Spanish show Money Heist or La Casa De Papel invites viewers for a thrilling experience as it follows the plans of mastermind criminal “The Professor” and his team. Money Heist’s first 2 seasons focus on the heist of the Royal Mint of Spain in which was a glorious success. The spirit of crime and theft continues in seasons 3 and 4 with a message to the government as The Professor and his team step up to rob the Bank of Spain.

4 Criminal UK (2019) 92%

Released in 2019, Criminal UK is a Netflix crime series, set as a police interrogation. The show involves multiple crime suspects who undergo interrogation and questioning to determine their guilt or innocence in their case. With a new season just released in September 2020, the show has gotten more attention by fans with stars like Game of Thrones’ Kit Harrington taking the role of Alex Daniels in season 2 episode 2. Criminal UK allows the audience to not only practice their detective skills but also their ability to psychologically examine the interrogation. 3 The Sinner (2017) 90%

The Sinner explores the life of Detective Harry Ambrose and his journey solving crimes in New York. In the show, Ambrose works to answer questions relating to why people commit crimes all while battling his troubles within his personal life.

2 You (2018) 90%

Netflix’s You stars Gossip Girls Penn Badgley. Badgley portrays the character of Joe Goldberg, a troubled and obsessive man who uses all available resources to showcase his sinister obsession with the young female writer; Beck. Although You at first seems to be a promising love story, the audience soon realizes this is the opposite as Goldberg goes to great lengths to be close with his love interest; this includes disposing of people who stand in his way. The chilling and thrilling show received a 90% Rotten Tomatoes rating after it’s release in 2018 and is renewed for season 3.

1 Narcos (2015) 89%

Narcos follows the story of a drug cartel in Columbia. Based on the life of Pablo Escobar and his involvement in the drug realm, Narcos illustrates the efforts of police to battle the production of cocaine as the show is set during the drug wars in the late 80s. Narcos is a drama that uses the harsh realities of a notorious drug cartel to appeal to a new modern audience. With this, the suspenseful show received a score of 89% from Rotten Tomatoes. Although the show was not renewed for a 4th season, in 2018, Netflix revealed the Narcos storyline would continue in a whole new series titled “Narcos: Mexico” with a new setting and cast. Narcos: Mexico aired in 2020 and has 2 successful seasons.
