Critics have gotten the first look at Pixar's new animated film, Soul, and are thoroughly impressed by its story, humor, visuals and overall message.
Soul currently has a perfect 100% score on the review site, Rotten Tomatoes. The animated movie premiered for its first audience at the London Film Festival on Oct. 11. and critics have been astonished ever since.
As of this writing, Soul had 19 Rotten Tomato critic reviews. Many of the reviews describe the film as a theatrical celebration of life, and a very emotional movie with stunning visuals and rich humor. "It is hard to think of another film this year so rich in character or so powerful in its emotional weight," said Liam Macleod of HeyUGuys. "Pixar had the ambition to make something as life-affirming and inspiring as A Matter of Life and Death for children. And they succeeded."
Clarisse Loughrey from Independent (UK) said, "[N]ot only does Soul live up to Pixar's own impossibly high standards, but it represents the very best the studio has to offer: beauty, humour, heart and a gut-punch of an existential crisis."
Pixar decided to shift away from a theatrical release to send Soul straight to Disney+. The film will debut on the streaming service on Dec. 25. Unlike Mulan, which was released on Disney+'s Premium Access service for $30, Soul will be available to all subscribers for free.
What is it that makes you...YOU? This December, Pixar Animation Studios’ all-new feature film “Soul” introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) – a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.
Directed by Pete Docter, Soul stars Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, Rachel House, Richard Ayoade and Angela Bassett. The film will debut on Disney+ on Dec. 25.
