10 The Town - 92%

Boston native Ben Affleck made his directorial debut in 2007 with the Beantown-set crime drama Gone Baby Gone. Three years later, he once again returned to his old neighborhood to shoot The Towna superbly crafted thriller about a bank robber who must balance his affection for a victim of his previous crimes with planning his next heist and escaping the F.B.I., which is hot on his trail.

The ensemble cast is terrific, and as a director, Affleck's Boston roots bring an unmistakable authenticity to what otherwise might have been a more boilerplate genre flick.

9 Dallas Buyer's Club - 93%

2013's Dallas Buyer's Club is the exhilarating and emotional true story about an HIV-positive Texas hustler named Ron Woodruff who circumvents the inadequacies of the American healthcare system in order to get his fellow patients the medicine they need to survive. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto each won Oscars for their performances, McConaughey as Woodruff, and Leto as a transgender prostitute succumbing to the awful disease. This is heavy viewing - the subject matter is tragic and at times difficult to watch - but worth the investment for those who can handle it.

8 Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind - 93%

Few movies as odd and original as this one are executed with such perfection. Charlie Kaufman's screenplay, Michel Gondry's direction, and the lead performances by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are all sublime, making Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind a minor miracle of a film.

It's a sweet, sad, tender, funny, and endlessly imaginative love story about a former couple who have their memories of each other erased. It was a modest hit upon its release, but since has rightfully amassed a cult following. It's a gem, pure, and simple.

7 Being John Malkovich - 93%

Another Charlie Kaufman entry, 1999's Being John Malkovich was the acclaimed screenwriter's first feature-length screenplay. This film is a true original in the sense that no movie exists that's anything like it. John Cusack stars as an out-of-work puppeteer who takes a temporary office job and discovers a portal that takes him into the mind of actor John Malkovich, who of course plays himself.

Spike Jonze was the perfect director for this project, as he brings this oddball story to life in his own quirky and imaginative style.

6 Her - 94%

The premise of Spike Jonze's Her sounds as though it could never actually work as a serious sci-fi love story. Joaquin Phoenix plays a lonely man who earns his living ghost-writing personal letters for strangers. He then falls in love with "Samantha," the voice of a new artificial intelligence-based operating system, a sort of "Siri," so to speak. Phoenix's soulful performance and Jonze's tender directorial touch bring an emotional sincerity to the film that can't be denied, despite its outlandish premise.

5 Fargo - 94%

Brothers Joel and Ethan Coen defined the dark comedy genre in 1994 with their landmark masterpiece, Fargo. Based on true events, this devilish little caper tells the story of a failing used car salesman who hires two lowly criminals to kidnap his wife so he can pocket the ransom money from his father-in-law.

To put it mildly, things don't go exactly according to plan. Fargo is a wild ride - a must-see that warrants multiple repeat viewings.

4 An Education - 94%

2009's An Education is a coming of age story about a young, sheltered teenager who puts her life journey on hold in favor of a relationship with an older suitor who isn't who he claims to be.

Carrie Mulligan received an Oscar nomination for her performance, which launched her career as an A-list celebrity. The film also earned nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. Its sensitive subject matter won't appeal to everyone, but for certain tastes, it's well worth the watch.

3 Raiders Of The Lost Ark - 95%

There isn't much to say about Raiders of the Lost Ark that hasn't been said already. It's a landmark action-adventure thriller starring Harrison Ford as the iconic Indiana Jones who is hired by the United States government to find the sacred ark of the covenant, only to find out that Hitler's Nazi army is pursuing it alongside him.

Raiders is one of many timeless blockbusters from legendary director Steven Spielberg, and it's never a bad time to rewatch this bonafide classic.

2 Back To The Future - 96%

1985's Back To The Future is one of the best comedies ever made. A California teen is thrust back to the 1950's, where he must simultaneously ensure his parents fall in love to secure his very existence, and also rescue his scientist friend from being murdered by terrorists, a scene that occurs at the beginning of the film.

An ingenious script, terrific lead performances from Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, a rousing musical score, and a thrilling finale combine to make this an unmissable classic to be enjoyed over and over again.

1 Airplane! - 97%

Far from the weightiest film leaving Netflix next month, 1980's Airplane! is nonetheless the best-reviewed film on the list. It's a spoof film that borrows its plot from the 1957 drama, Zero Hour!, and its title from the 70's Airport disaster franchise.

It's unapologetically silly and light, but its slapstick sketches and quotable punchlines make it an enduring comedy classic. Starring Julie Haggerty, Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Nielsen, and featuring NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Airplane! has stood the test of time, and remains a beloved comedy 40 years after its original release.
