The seven-part Police Academy series was one of the biggest and most popular film franchises of the 1980s. The decade-long run of comedies spanning from 1984 to 1994 concerned a ragtag band of inept police trainees who contend with a dictatorial police chief, several personal and professional hurdles, as well as a slew of juvenile shenanigans.

The film franchise spawned two short-lived TV series in the '80s and '90s, and an eighth feature-film has remained in development limbo since 2003. In 2018, star Steven Guttenberg confirmed that a new film entry was being prepped. But how does each film in the series stack up?

7 Police Academy: Mission To Moscow (1994) 0% Tomatometer-22% Audience Score

Police Academy 7 Mission to Moscow

Since half of the Police Academy films tend to boast a 0% Tomatometer rating from critics, it only seems right to include the Audience Score as well. The sixth and final film in the series to date, Mission to Moscow, is the least favorable among casual filmgoers.

The only film in the series to be produced in the 1990s, Police Academy 7 finds what's left of the original police squad as they are tasked with bringing down a Russian mafioso named Konstantine Konali (Ron Perlman). While Harris (G.W. Bailey), Lassard (George Gaynes), Jones (Michael Winslow), and Tackleberry (David Graf) all return, the film suffers from the glaring absence of their wisecracking leader, Sgt. Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg).

6 Police Academy 6: City Under Siege (1989) 0% Tomatometer-28% Audience Score

Also suffering from the absence of charismatic leader Steve Guttenberg as Sgt. Mahoney, City Under Siege reunites most of the original Police Academy members as they doggedly attempt to end a rash of daring heists in the affluent Wilson Heights neighborhood.

Harris and Lassard are joined by Hooks (Marion Ramsey), Hightower (Bubba Smith), Tackleberry, Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook), Jones, Proctor (Lance Kinsey), and more as they zero in a trio of inept burglars terrorizing the rich part of town. The discovery of an internal mole leads to a bumbling undercover effort that threatens to ruin the entire case.

Police Academy 4 Citizens on Patrol

Citizens on Patrol marks the fourth and final time Steve Guttenberg starred as Sgt. Carey Mahoney in the Police Academy franchise. Also starring Sharon Stone in her only series appearance, the plot concerns the original Academy officers tasked with training a civilian police unit.

While Lassard thinks the assignment is a good way to help ease the stress and overworked schedule of his officers, the cantankerous Captain Harris does his best to sabotage the mission. The only thing worse than the bumbling officers is their ability to train civilians to uphold the law.

Police Academy 3 back in Action

With parts two and three under his belt, Jerry Paris was the only director to helm more than one Police Academy entry. In Back in Training, the original lineup returns to help prevent the shutdown of their station by training a crop of new recruits.

With budget cuts threatening to close down their station, Mahoney and his mischievous band of officers must impress the Governor by preparing a new outfit of the city's finest new police cadets. However, a dastardly plot by Commandant Mauser (Art Metrano) throws a wrench in their best-laid intentions.

2 Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985) 31% Tomatometer-42% Audience Score

Fresh off their Academy graduation, the newly named band of police officers from the original film gets a stark dose of reality when taking on Their First Assignment.

Following a brutal street attack perpetrated by a local gang called The Scullions, Cmdt. Lassard gives his precinct 30 days to clean up its act or go out of business. Mahoney and five of his best officers set out to bring down the gang and its juvenile leader, Zed (Bobcat Goldthwait), who later becomes a member of the force in subsequent films.

1 Police Academy (1984) 54% Tomatometer-64% Audience Score

Police Academy 1984

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the Police Academy movies decrease in quality with each passing entry. As such, the original 1984 film still ranks as the best of the bunch.

Directed by Hugh Wilson, the film set the formula for the next six films to come. A good-natured but inept group of police trainees put their superiors through a series of immature pranks and practical jokes. The crop of new recruits is led by Carey Mahoney, a charmingly sophomoric cadet more interested in having fun than learning how to enforce the law. Mahoney is the perfect foil for Lt. Harris, a hard-up tyrant with no sense of humor whatsoever.
