Netflix: The 10 Best Original Animated Series, According To Rotten Tomatoes - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Although it's not a definitive way of finding out how good a series is, Rotten Tomatoes has made a name for itself in at least giving potential viewers a general idea of the quality of what they plan to watch, as both professional critics and viewers alike are able to give their thoughts on the show in question. With the ease of access to certain series, particularly on streaming services like Netflix, sites like Rotten Tomatoes go a long way in helping viewers decide what to watch.

The accuracy of critic reviews may have come into question in recent years, but it's a lot harder to argue with the response of the everyday audience member, as they are a lot easier to relate to when it comes to a series' quality— and more often than not don't care too much about things like film direction or dialogue that critics will hone in on.

10 Blood Of Zeus (80)

Zeus rides into the final battle

One of the more recent animated series on Netflix, Blood of Zeus seems to be riding the success of darker shows like Castlevania rather successfully and is one of the better animated series on Netflix right now. The series follows Heron, the demi-god son of Zeus created for the show, as he learns of his true heritage as the son of a god and his destiny to save both Olympus and Earth from a demonic army.

Like Castlevania, there is a lot of blood and violence in this series, as would be expected for a show centered around ancient Greece— though it never falls into gratuitousness.

9 Final Space (84)

final space

One of the more divisive series on Netflix, at least from a critic's standpoint, Final Space is a sci-fi comedy centered around Gary Goodspeed, a prisoner serving a five-year working sentence.

On his final days incarcerated, Gary discovers a mysterious and powerful being who he names Mooncake, who it turns out is being hunted down by the evil Lord Commander, voiced spectacularly by the 10th Doctor himself, David Tennant. Final Space may be a little ridiculous at times, but it's hard not to love the series in spite of that— or sometimes even because of it.

8 Castlevania (88)

Video game adaptions are generally seen as a bad idea, as they aren't known for their quality or adhesion to the source material. Castlevania, on the other hand, manages to not only be a great animated series in its own right but manages to elevate certain aspects of the game series' story above what was capable at the time of their initial release in the late '80s and early '90s.

Castlevania takes many elements from all across the series, with its first two seasons borrowing heavily from Dracula's Curse while its third draws from Curse of Darkness, though it also manages to elevate characters and plot points to a higher level than they were shown in those games.

7 She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power (88)

She-Ra Adora New Costume

A reboot of a spin-off series of He-ManShe-Ra follows Adora, a warrior for the evil Horde army who turns to the side of good after finding a sword that transforms her into She-Ra, using her new power and insight to take down Horde Prime and liberate her home, Etheria, from their rule.

Strangely, despite She-Ra being a spin-off of He-Man, that titular character is nowhere to be found in this series, though this allows She-Ra to stand as a hero by her own merits rather than in comparison to her male counterpart.

6 The Midnight Gospel (89)

One of the more psychedelic series on Netflix, which should be expected from the same creative minds behind Adventure Time, The Midnight Gospel follows Clancy Gilroy, a spacecaster who travels to simulated worlds to interview the inhabitants of those worlds for his podcast.

Many of these interviews are based on real-life interviews done for the Duncan Trussell Family Hour, a podcast created by one of The Midnight Gospel's creators, Duncan Trussell— though they generally all end with an apocalyptic event that Clancy barely escapes from.

5 Love, Death & Robots (90)

With the success of shows like Black Mirror and the Twilight Zone reboot, it makes sense that someone would try the same structure with an animated series. Love, Death & Robots is an anthology series with each episode varying in lengths and subject matter, though all taking place in a sci-fi setting and focusing on either love, death, or robots, or a combination of the three.

Although the series didn't find as much success as its inspirations with critics, the audience response has been overwhelmingly positive and, thankfully, has resulted in it being picked up for a second season.

4 The Dragon Prince (93)

Rayla With Callum, Ezran, Bait and Zym the Dragon Prince

It's hard not to compare The Dragon Prince to Avatar: The Last Airbender, as Aaron Ehasz, the series creator, was also the lead writer for Avatar. There are some clear similarities between the two shows, but The Dragon Prince is more than capable of standing on its own merits and is well worth watching for fans of the Avatar series.

Taking place in a much more westernized fantasy world— as opposed to Avatar's clear eastern influence— the series follows princes Ezran and Callum as they try to stop an impending war between men and elves by returning the titular Dragon Prince, Zim, to his mother, as he was thought to have died in a previous assault on the Dragon King, Thunder.

3 Aggretsuko (93)

inui haida and retsuko aggretsuko

This anime series has a surprisingly deep underlying theme despite its art style and main character's design. Retsuko, a red panda, struggles with a frustrating work and social life at a Japanese accounting firm, though she manages to find some stress relief when she discovers her love of death metal karaoke, which she performs every night to help her manage her emotional state.

Like a certain other animated series on Netflix, Aggretsuko doesn't use its anthropomorphic characters as a cover for its heavier subject matter and is all the better for it.

2 F Is For Family (94)

F Is For Family

F is For Family may be abrasive and somewhat divisive, but its satirical take on the suburban family life is a welcome change from the overly comedic likes of The Simpsons or Family Guy while still being able to inject elements of comedy into the story.

Although the series borrows heavily from other animated family sitcoms, such as the father's overpaid, overworked job and his somewhat ridiculous family life, F is For Family still manages to focus on the real-world implications of those scenarios, including the threat of unemployment and its impact of a family's home life.

1 BoJack Horseman (95)

BoJack Horseman

Bojack Horseman has been praised to the moon and back for its take on the lives of celebrities, as well as the impact of addiction, depression, and mental and emotional disorders on their everyday lives, as well as the lives of everyday people.

Despite most of the characters being anthropomorphic animals of some variety, it's almost impossible not to relate to at least one of the characters, no matter how outlandish they appear on the surface, and goes a long way to shining a light on the importance of seeking help when you need it, no matter what your lifestyle is like.
