Clooney has directed a total of nine projects since 2002, beginning with the debut feature film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. After working with the Coen Brothers four times in the past and sharing the screen with Matt Damon several times, Clooney joined forces with all three in Suburbicon, a mordant comedic thriller that did not land well.
Starring a cast of Coen brothers' regulars, Suburbicon follows Gardner Lodge (Damon), a staid suburbanite in 1959 who suddenly uncovers the seedy side of his idyllic existence when a new family moves in next door. The further Gardner tries to avoid the murder and mayhem in his neighborhood, the more he becomes implicated.

Based on the nonfiction book by Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter, Clooney co-wrote, directed, and starred in The Monuments Men, a historical war comedy featuring a stellar ensemble.
The title refers to a platoon of soldiers in WWII who is given the unique mission of crossing enemy lines in Germany to find and preserve invaluable works of art. The priceless artworks were stolen by thieving Nazis and the Monuments Men are tasked with returning them to their rightful owners.
7 Leatherheads (2008) 52%
The third feature film Clooney directed was Leatherheads, a period football picture that he starred in alongside Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski. The screwball rom-com set in 1925 stars Clooney as Dodge Connelly, an aging football star with a plan to return to glory.
When Dodge's professional football team loses its sponsorship, the wily quarterback recruits popular war hero Carter Rutherford (Krasinski) to join the squad. Getting in their way to success is Lexie Littleton (Zellweger), a fiery journalist who doesn't believe Carter's war story.

Despite the Oscar talk emanating from certain critical circles, Clooney's newest film The Midnight Sky currently boasts a middling Rotten Tomatoes rating. Based on the book Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton, Clooney stars as Augustine Lighthouse, a scientist with the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Stationed in the Arctic, Augustine leads a lonely mission to prevent a crew of astronauts from returning home to an apocalyptic wasteland. Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Tiffany Boone, Demian Bichir, and Kyle Chandler costar in the film.

3 Catch-22 (2019) 84%
Fourteen years after directing television for the first time, Clooney returned to the small screen in 2019 via the well-received adaptation of Joseph Heller's Catch-22. Clooney directed two of the six episodes of the Hulu original series.
The series stars Christopher Abbott as Yossarian, a rebellious and free-thinking soldier who finds the bureaucracy of the military more soul-crushing than combat itself when dispatched to Pianosa island. Clooney costars in the show as General Scheisskopf.

Based on the Beau Willimon stageplay, Clooney co-wrote, directed, and starred in the star-studded political thriller The Ides of March. Clooney earned his second Oscar nod for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film.

Clooney's most personal passion project Good Night, And Good Luck earned six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay. The true-story of TV news anchor Edward R. Murrow taking down the hysteria of Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s is the best project Clooney has directed thus far, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
David Strathairn stars as Murrow, the public conscientious objector to the rank McCarthyism of the era. Clooney stars as Murrow's chief producer Fred Friendly, who together remained steadfast in their opposition to McCarthy and their mission to expose his fraudulence.
