Wonder Woman 1984 loses its Certified Fresh rating on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. After facing multiple delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 was finally released in the U.S. on Christmas Day after it arrived in international theaters in mid-December. The DCEU sequel was the first movie to release in theaters and on HBO Max the same day, a plan that Warner Bros. will apply to all of their 2021 movies. Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, the highly anticipated sequel sees Gal Gadot reprise her role as the titular superhero facing off against comic villains Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Barbara Minerva/Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), while bringing back Chris Pine as Steve Trevor. Set in 1984, the movie takes place decades after the events of 2017's Wonder Woman.
Early reviews for Wonder Woman 1984 were positive, with Screen Rant's own Molly Freeman praising the movie as being filled with "hope, love and wonder," and other critics saying the movie was worth the wait. As of December 17, the sequel was certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel initially scored at an 89%, making it one of the best-reviewed DCEU films, behind the first Wonder Woman, Shazam! and Birds of Prey. The general consensus for the film said it was the hopeful and optimistic sequel that audiences need at the end of such a dark year. As more reviews came in, the score later dropped to 80%, but still remained Fresh. However, after its Wonder Woman 1984's release in theaters and on HBO Max on December 25, the sequel has lost its Certified Fresh rating.
Wonder Woman 1984 is no longer Certified Fresh thanks to its score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer dropping to 67% (as of this writing). With a total of 271 reviews and an average rating of 6.30 out of 10 on the Tomatometer, the Critics Consensus reads, "Wonder Woman 1984 struggles with sequel overload, but still offers enough vibrant escapism to satisfy fans of the franchise and its classic central character.
The movie, which currently holds a 74% audience score, is being described by critics as "confusing," "narratively messy" and "tonally schizophrenic," with some criticizing the movie for being too long and not pushing the Wonder Woman story forward. 182 critics gave the film a Fresh rating and 89 rated it Rotten.
It's not uncommon for a movie's score to drop after its second wave of reviews come in, but it is a little surprising to see Wonder Woman 1984's plummet so far, resulting in the sequel now receiving a very different consensus. What's more, a Certified Fresh rating typically means Rotten Tomatoes is confidant the score is unlikely to change much, but that's clearly not the case here. However, 67% is still a fairly decent score, and while Wonder Woman 1984 may not live up to the first movie, it sounds like it's still a fun movie for fans and those who want an uplifting end to the year.
