February’s a short month, so it was no surprise when Hulu dropped a major release a few days early: Cult favorite one-season series Freaks and Geeks — created by Paul Feig, executive produced by Judd Apatow, and starring James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Linda Cardellini, and Busy Philipps, among others — headed to streaming on Monday, Janary 25.
Set at a Midwestern high school in 1980, it took years to get even a DVD release thanks to its pricey music rights (for songs by the Grateful Dead, Billy Joel, Joan Jett, the Who, Rush, Styx, and more) — so its new streaming home is great news for fans of the 18-episode, 100% Certified Fresh dramedy.
Other new TV highlights include a new two-episode documentary series on FX, Hip Hop Uncovered; the first installment of Into the Dark’s season 3, “Tentacles”; and an intriguing new episode of FX’s non-fiction New York Times Presents, “Framing Britney Spears,” a reexamination of the singer’s rise to fame, her career, and her controversial court-mandated conservatorship.
Two Oscar-friendly films will debut on Hulu this month: Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand, and Lee Daniels’ Billie Holiday biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday, starring Andra Day. Some theatrical releases hitting Hulu include Logan Lucky starring Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and Daniel Craig; Possessor: Uncut from Brandon Cronenberg; and Guillermo del Toro’s Best Picture Oscar-winner The Shape of Water.
