Godzilla vs Kong is almost upon us at last, poised to provide an answer to that age-old question of who would really win in a fight: destructive sea monster Godzilla or enormous ape King Kong?

The ultimate blockbuster has now received its Rotten Tomatoes verdict and the movie has scored a rather impressive 81% Fresh rating from critics on the review-aggregation website.

The monster movie, directed by Death Note director Adam Wingard, features Godzilla and King Kong battling it out while the humans who try to protect them deal with their own world-saving issues.

The film features an all-star cast, including Big Little Lies' Alexander Skarsgård, Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown, Iron Man 3's Rebecca Hall and Joker's Brian Tyree Henry, and a very impressive budget.

If the Rotten Tomatoes score and a number of positive reviews are to be believed, it's worth checking out. Take a look at our round-up of critics' reviews below, including Digital Spy's take on the movie:

Digital Spy

"Was the battle of the titans worth the wait? If you're tuning into Godzilla vs Kong to see the two massive titans beat the living hell out of each other (and why wouldn't you?), the answer is an absolute yes. The movie isn't without its issues, but in terms of delivering on the carnage promised, you'd be hard-pressed to find a fan that won't be satisfied...

"If there's one thing Godzilla vs Kong absolutely does get right, it's in the treatment of the central titans as the awe-inspiring giants that they are. Even on a TV screen, you won't mistake the scale of them and any time they're on screen, you'll forgive the slightly bland humans and the ludicrous plot.

"Visually, the movie is a feast and pleasingly, it has Wingard's distinct style over it."

The Guardian

"It's not that Godzilla vs Kong isn't also overstuffed but as a whole it's a more graceful beast, dotting from one plot thread to the other with speed and agility, a proudly defined b-movie that picks goofiness over the strange self-serious pretentiousness that suffocated the Godzillas that came before it."

IndieWire

"The action-packed final act is crammed with plenty of fan catnip - what is a Godzilla film without a nighttime battle set in a neon-colored city? - that maintains momentum and furthers the story with every big-pawed swipe. The tantalizing final frames hint at more to come, but Godzilla vs Kong does something rare: It offers a satisfying story that can stand alone, even when its monstrous heroes demand more exploration."

Los Angeles Times

"It will disappoint the 14 people who come to Godzilla vs Kong looking for an insightful disquisition on the human condition embodied by relatable characters engaged in logical problem-solving. But who cares, when the rest of us get King Kong in a helicopter-hammock, and a chance to become reacquainted with a concept that has been as absent from recent blockbuster filmmaking as it has from our recent lives. What is it called again? Oh, yes. Fun."

However, not every review was quite so flattering:

The Wrap

"If you're here for Godzilla, get ready for a decided lack of fan service: Kong gets the bulk of the screen time (and the backstory), and the Godzilla musical theme and legendary roar are both noticeably absent here. Godzilla vs Kong does provide a few third-act surprises linked to his past, but overall, the top billing masks his treatment as a secondary protagonist."

Collider

"Someone's going to make a 25-minute version of this movie that's just the monster fights, and people will prefer it... The film does what it says on the tin, and if you're in it solely for monster brawls, you'll get your money's worth ... But Godzilla vs Kong is another example of how thin a film can be when it offers nothing but CGI spectacle and cares about little else."

Empire

"Damn, it makes you work for the fun. Over 40 minutes of runtime pass until the two titans actually meet, and those minutes feel like a slog, as we're introduced to a new ensemble of Exposition Delivery Units that could charitably be described as 'characters'. Any time the monsters are not on screen, in fact, is draining."

Godzilla vs Kong will be available to rent at home from April 1 in the UK and is released in cinemas and on HBO Max in the US on March 31.
