Netflix's Cuties has been subject to plenty of backlash in the leadup to, as well as the days following its release, especially since causing #CancelNetflix to trend on social media. However, that negative press has now made its way onto other platforms.
On Rotten Tomatoes, there's currently a significant difference between Cuties' aggregated score from critics (88% from 33 reviews) and audiences (3% from 1,047 reviews). The latter
A number of the reviews are hardly more than a sentence, and simply call out the film's sexualization or reflect value judgments rather than offering any sort of constructive criticism. One user called it "absolute trash," while another summed up their thoughts by writing, "Wtf..........terrible."
Cuties has also caught the attention of the QAnon movement, which is a far-right conspiracy theory popular in the United States that claims a shadowy organization of pedophiles are part of the country's "ruling class," including the Hollywood elite. While the film certainly isn't claiming the sexualization of young girls is a good idea, a lot of Netflix's promotional material and marketing surrounding the film puts those girls front and center.
The film currently maintains its 88% rating from critics, with its consensus calling the film "a thoughtful look at the intricacies of girlhood in the modern age, Cuties is a coming-of-age film that confronts its themes with poignancy and nuance."
Eleven-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative family's traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.
Written and directed by Maïmouna Doucouré, Cuties stars Fathia Youssouf, Médina El Aidi-Azouni, Esther Gohourou and Ilanah Cami-Goursolas. The film is currently available to stream on Netflix.
