A new movie filmed in Syracuse is out in time for Mother’s Day with a top score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Paper Spiders,” a mother-daughter drama starring Emmy-nominated actress Lili Taylor (“Say Anything,” “Mystic Pizza”) and Stefania LaVie Owen (”The Carrie Diaries”), was released in select theaters nationally Friday (May 7, 2021). The film is not showing on the big screen in Central New York, but it’s also available today for rent or purchase on Video on Demand (VOD) / Digital platforms like Amazon and Apple iTunes.

The bittersweet coming-of-age story follows a high school student’s (LaVie Owen) senior year being turned upside down when her mother (Taylor) begins to suffer from a mental illness. The cast also includes Peyton List (“Cobra Kai”), Max Casella (“The Sopranos”), Tom Papa (“The Marriage Ref”), Ian Nelson (“The Hunger Games”), and David Rasche (”Men in Black 3″).

Inon Shampanier directs on a script co-written with Natalie Shampanier, who were inspired by a personal experience. The film is produced by the late Ash Christian and Anne Clements under Cranium Entertainment.

According to Inon Shampanier, the film was timed for release with Mother’s Day weekend and Mental Health Awareness Month, with the support of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

“It is our hope that the film will contribute to public and private conversations about the need to support those struggling with mental health challenges, and destigmatizing the shame that prevents many people from seeking help,” Shampanier said.

“Paper Spiders” is currently certified 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, with positive reviews from The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter and the Los Angeles Times.

“It is a pleasure to see Lili Taylor sink her teeth into a starring role, and she plays her character’s manic descent with a palpable and heartbreaking practicality,” NYT critic Teo Bugbee said.

“In Dawn’s rages and in the wordless shifts of attention that play across her face, Taylor makes her mounting distress fully felt,” THR’s Sheri Linden wrote. “Owen counters that inward intensity with an open-hearted earnestness, making Melanie’s dilemma all the more moving — the responsibility she must shoulder and the momentous decisions she’s forced to make at such a young age.”

“Some will find ‘Paper Spiders’ too much to handle, but others might find the hope they need in overcoming obstacles in their own lives - and that gives this film the most crucial ingredient in being truly great: purpose,” Cultured Vultures added.

The film also won multiple awards, including best film, best screenplay and best actress (Taylor) at the 2020 Boston Film Festival.

Paper Spiders” was shot entirely in Central New York in May 2019, with scenes at the Greater Syracuse Soundstage (formerly known as the film hub in DeWitt), the Red Mill Inn in Baldwinsville, the B’ville Diner, a Thrifty Shopper store, the Syracuse University campus, and two bars in Armory Square: Al’s Wine & Whiskey Lounge and the Syracuse Suds Factory.

“Syracuse is a beautiful city that is so rich in character,” Shampanier told Anthem Magazine. “We’ve received great support from film commissioner Eric Vinal, from the city and the community.”
